Places of interest in Rishikesh

Ram Jhula – is a 450 feet long suspension bridge that was built in 1980. It is wonderful to walk on the bridge and watch the Ganga River gushing below in full flow. This bridge links Swarg Ashram on one end and the Sivananda Ashram on the other and also offers a view of the river, valleys and temples. You must walk slowly on the bridge if you want to enjoy the view of all the beautiful scenery.

Laxman Jhula

This is also a 450-foot suspension bridge which was built in 1939. This bridge is a popular attraction in Rishikesh as it is believed that it is from here that Lord Laxman crossed the Ganga River on a jute rope. There are also plenty of shops and cafes on both sides of the bridge but the Tera Manzil Mandir situated close by can be distinguished because of its colourful façade.

Triveni Ghat

It is one of the most famous ghats in Rishikesh as this is where the confluence of three major rivers – Ganga, Yamuna and legendary Saraswati takes place. This ghat has been mentioned in both the Ramayana and the Mahabharata and a dip in the river in the ghat is said to purge our sins.

Parmarth Niketan

Established in 1942 the Parmarth Niketan is among the top places to visit in Rishikesh. The Ashram has its own private ghat which has now become famous for the beautiful Ganga Arti they perform every evening. Anyone can take part in this Arti which is performed by lighting diyas (lamps) and floating them on the river.

Beatles Ashram

Beatles Ashram is named after the famous British pop band ‘The Beatles’. It is named after them because they visited the ashram and stayed there to do transcendental meditation. People visit this tourist spot to see the meditation caves.

Neelkanth Mahadev Temple

Located around 30 km from Rishikesh, this holy temple is a must visit place for devotees of Lord Shiva. It is believed that the temple is built on the very same spot where Lord Shiva drank the venom ‘Halahala’ that came from the Samudra Manthan. The temple also has a freshwater spring where devotees can take a holy dip.

Haridwar

Haridwar is an ancient city and important Hindu pilgrimage spot that is 30 kms away from Rishikesh. This is the place where the River Ganges exits the Himalayan foothills. Har Ki Pauri is the largest bathing ghat here, if you wish to take a dip in the Holy Ganges. They also perform the Ganga Aarti here where the River Ganga is worshipped every evening and lamps are floated on the river.
